Welcome to Labrador City!
Situated along the western region of Newfoundland and Labrador in the unspoiled wilderness at the foot of the Wapuskatta Mountain range, Labrador City is one of the most accessible centres in all of Labrador and is replete with services, attractions and activities geared toward adventure seekers and outdoor enthusiasts. Shaped by thousands of years of Aboriginal influence, early French trading and the advent of geological exploration, the relatively young city experienced significant growth following the development of the iron-ore mining industry in the mid-1950s. This unique history is at the ready for exploring at the Gateway Labrador, a regional museum that provides a comprehensive overview of the region dating back 3500 years to the present.Characterized by long, cold winters and short, mild summers, the city embraces its extended winter season through an array of recreational opportunities at the Smokey Mountain Ski Resort, the renowned performance training and recreational facility of Menihek Nordic Ski Club and through exhilarating snowmobiling adventures, overseen locally by the White Wolf Snowmobile Club. The area's snowmobile culture is celebrated annually during the Cain's Quest Snowmobile Endurance Race, which pits teams of two snowmobile drivers in a challenging long-distance race, covering over 2500 km (1553 mi) of rugged and remote Labrador terrain. The summer months in the city bring average temperatures around the 21 °C (70 °F) mark, ideal for golf, park visits, leisurely relaxation on a community beach and lakeside walks.
