Rocky Harbour Travel Guide

Welcome to Rocky Harbour!
The allure of Rocky Harbour lies in its location, directly within Gros Morne National Park. This tiny Newfoundland town has a population of just over 1,000 residents, but tourists keep the streets busy during the summer season. The area was occupied by Mimic Indians until English and French fishermen brought more permanent settlements. The town earned Local Government Community status in 1966. The park itself is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the first places where plate tectonics was proven. Two different landscapes (coastal lowlands and alpine plateaus), 239 bird species and several distinct animal species (red fox and harbour seal) are all found within this majestic natural playground. The challenging 16-km (10 mi) James Callaghan Trail leads hikers to the top of the mountain, for some unforgettable views. The Western Brook Pond Trail extends 6 km (4 mi) and leads to a pond with a boat launch. Also on the grounds is the Gros Morne Attractions Fun Park, a family destination with water rides, paddle boats and mini golf. The Lobster Cove Lighthouse, built in 1892 is located in the park and features an interpretive centre for visitors to learn about local history. A trip to Rocky Harbour is not complete without an exciting whale watching tour. Local tour companies offer a chance to experience whales, icebergs and puffins. Wildlife research expeditions are also available. For the full Rocky Harbour experience, visit its unique restaurants and shops, yielding unique regional food and locally made crafts and gifts.Tourist Attractions
